72 hour tourist visa

Returning to the USA from vacation in Philippines. Manila Beijing LAX. Can I stay for 72 hrs  on the tourist visa?

For your case, you are eligible for the 72h visa free transit. You can apply for a transit permit in Beijing Capital Airport, with which you can tour the city for 72h. Therefore, no transit visa is needed. If you happen to have a tourist visa, it would be better, because the 72h visa free policy only allows you stay in Beijing city.
