Justa Couple of Questions about Tourist L application

For number 4, How would I show and provide proof of legal stay or residence status at the Visa Embassy? If I have an invitation letter from a friend in China, what is ALL of the info that would need to be in the letter? They only tell me some of it and then say etc., so it doesn't exactly help me all the way. I want to be able to know I have all of the right information when I go to the Chicago Embassy

If you have a resident permit in other country, the original and copy of them are needed. If you have a entry permit/staying permit, a copy of that page on your passport is OK.

The invitation letter should include your basic information (full name, gender, date of birth, working status, phone number), information about the planned visit (purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, place(s) to be visited, relations between the applicant and the inviting entity or individual, financial source for expenditures) and your Chinese friend's information (name, contact telephone number, address, signature of your friend, working status, the bank statement if he supports your traveling).

Is it ok if we haven't decided a departure date until after I get my Tourist L? I want to be able to stay there as long as they give me from the agency

If you have a friend to invite you to go to China, you can decide when you want to leave China. With the invitation letter, you do not need to use the round trip ticket for application, so that the departure date can be undecided.

Some sites have said that the person that invites you also needs to leave a stamp on the invitation they send you. Is a signature just ok for a letter? Or does it need to have a stamp and a signature? Also, my friend can't find his Chinese ID for some reason, so would it be ok if he just sent a copy of his passport instead?

Both the signature and the stamp are needed on the invitation letter.
It is not assured that whether the passport is OK, because your friend is a Chinese. If the ID card cannot provided, the household register (Hukou) is suggested to provided as well as the passport copies. It may be easier for you to get the Tourist L.

It is just the household register. You can ask your Chinese friend and they will know clearly.
