If you go back to Malaysia after your short trip in Guangzhou, then you can't enjoy 72 hours free transit in Guangzhou. If you fly back to Italy, then you are eligible for 72 hours free transit in Guangzhou.

You transfer at Guangzhou airport, right?
If so, the 72 hours are counted from the 00:00 the day next of your entry date. So th 72-hour of your trip is counted from 00:00, Dec 9, to 00:00 Dec 12. You can wait for your flight in the hotel.
