About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Can residence permit based on a family visa (Q2) be given in a place other than the sponsor's hukou?

I am American and married to a Chinese woman. She wants to sponsor me for the Q2. However, we don't want to live where her hukou is, but would rather live somewhere else. Is it it possible for me to get a residence permit in a place other than where her hukou is? Thanks for your response!

It is possible to do that in another city, but it requires that your sponor needs to stay in that city where you apply for a resident permit and at least she needs to have a local Temporary Residence Permit. Otherwise, you may not do that.

Catherine, I am afraid that it's almost impossible for you to acquire permanent resident permit though you can apply for it. It is reported that just around 200 foreigners can acquire that permit every year.
