About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US>Beijing>BKK

I'm a US citizen travelling to Thailand with a 20 hour lay over in Beijing. Would I need a stay permit in order to go out and see the Great Wall?

Yes, you are right. The stay permit is needed and it can be applied at the immigration counter with your passport and onward ticket.
