Can someone tell me the purpose of "Reporting to transfer desk" when connecting through CAN?

I am traveling through CAN airport on my way to BKK (LAX to CAN to BKK). All of the posts I have read tell me blindly to "Get off the plane → Report to airport transfer desk → Wait for boarding in Departure Hall." I want to know what the purpose of the Airport Transfer Desk is? Can't I just get off the plane and go to the gate for my next flight? Thank you for your response!
