Since you work in UK, you are suggested to apply it in UK through the local CVASC. If so, you can apply by post.
The application form can be gotten from the official website of Chinese embassy in UK. The fee is 74 Sterling for a single entry if you apply by post. Apply by post takes around 10 working days.

Hi Kathy,
not the easiest situation. Relations are quite harsh between France and China. You will need a formal letter of invite of local chinese business - stamped hard copy not a printed out one. You will have to provide a flight ticket and hotel reservation as well.
As each application center has slightly different rules, it is more than advise to get directly in contact with them and ask precisely what they require for french residents.
