what visa do i apply for if seeking an unpaid internship and also lacking a formal invitation?

No matter it is a unpaid type or a paid one, you need to apply for a Work Z for you intership.
BTW, for applying Work Z, you need to contact the company hires you to issue you an invitation letter (formal or informal) and a work permit.
