heicheng/badain jaran travel permit

Question

We are foreigners riding our legal motorcyles through Inner Mongolia soon and want to visit these two places.  Who issues permits (none available in BJ or Wuhai so far) and can we drive ourselves in this area?  I heard it was a security area for foreigners due to the space launch facility a bit further south.

Hi, Rock. Based on my information, you can ride your motorcyles there, because I could not find any documents to forbid foreigners to enter there. The desert in Badain Jaran is even a suggested to desert for foreigners. In my opinion, you can also try to find a local tour agency online to consult this issue in advance to confirm.
