Need help getting a visa for Australian

Hi, my name is David from Australia, I'm currently in Indonesia for a short study course. I'm planning to go to china for site seeing for less then 2 weeks. I have problem trying to apply my Chinese permit here in Indonesia, and I rang up the Chinese embassy in Melbourne, they said that I am not allowed to apply it if I'm not in Australia, so my hope of sending my passport back is gone.
I think I'm running out of options.
Would I be able to apply in HongKong?

I saw some people get it in HK, but it is not assured that you can still get now.

Personally speaking, there are many HK tour agency provide such kind of issue, so you can look for one online to consult in detail. Hope you can get one in HK ~
