Tourist Group or Individual Visas Needed?

My daughter is part of an American school group traveling to China in December. They have been invited to do so. There will be five (5) minor students and five (5) adults (three of which are parents of three different children in the group).

I would like to find out if they can travel with a group type—and what is required to obtain one—or if everyone needs an individual tourist type. Everyone has a valid passport.

Also, when applying, can one person in the group act as the agent for the entire group (i.e., appear at the consulate to make the application), as long as all of the paperwork is in order?

Thanks so much!

They may not join a tour group, right?
If so, they are not suggested to apply for a Group type. Only people join a tour group can apply that type. Personally speaking, the group type is not very convenient because it require the group members to enter and exit China together.

It is suggested to apply an individual tourist L. One person can act as a represetative to apply for others in the local Chinese embassy.
