You need to go to the Chinese consulate in San Francisco to apply for a Q type and the following documents are needed to prepare: both of your valid passport, an application with recent taken photo, an invitation letter from youw wife, copy of your wife's ID card, your marriage certificate and your son's birth certificate.

If you do not want to go to San Francisco, you can ask for a local agency to help you to apply.

For submitting the documents, it is not necessary to do in person. You can ask someone or agency to help you to do it.
However, after the embassy/consulate accept the documents, they have right to ask you to go to the embassy/consulate for an interview. If they required, you may need to go in person. If they do not require, you will not need to go to the embassy/consulate in person.
