I am currently starting my year study placement at a Shanghai university and my girlfriend wants to visit me for around 3 weeks to a month. She's British. Thank you in advance.

Davey, she needs to apply for a a L type. You can send her an invitation letter and copies of your passport and X type visa (temporary resident permit). Then she needn't provide the hotel reservation and return air ticket.
