Ref to Marilyn's question answered by Ken from San Marino on 8/24: What is invitation letter?

We planned to attend friend's wedding in Hong Kong in mid October. Host will also arrange group tour to Yunnan but no detailed plan provided as yet; therefore, no air nor hotel reservations booked. Are we required to provide air/hotel booking with application...and, what is invitation letter? Thank you.
