Help with parcel?

Here's the tracking info:

2014-08-12 11:55, 北京国际, 出口总包直封封发, 美国, Departure from outward office of exchange, US
2014-08-12 08:39, 北京国际, 出口总包互封开拆, 美国, Opening, US
2014-08-11 12:48, 北京国际邮件收寄中心, 收寄局收寄, 美国, Collection, US

What does "Departure from outward office of exchange" mean, exactly? Tracking for the destination, USA, is still "Not found." Is there a problem with my parcel, that it's taking this long for it show up?

M, I think your parcel was sent to USA on August 12. It takes 13 to 18 days to come to the USA. You should wait for its arrival patiently.

Thanks, Della. Can you tell me why it takes so long? I don't have a problem with waiting, but I'm curious as to how it works. Has it passed the export customs check at this point?Looking at other tracking numbers, the parcels usually get the status message "PVG, 交航" or something similar, within a day or so. Should I be concerned that there's a problem with my parcel? As far as I can see, parcels get "sent to airline" in a day or so after "customs check." How long does this step usually take?

There is nothing wrong with your parcel. PVG, 交航 refers that your parcel has passedthe export customs and boarded the plane. Compared with items sent by China Post to other countries, 13 to 18 days is faster. It takes a month or more to send packages to African and some European countries. Next time you may choose EMS. It is faster. It takes around 7 days to reach USA.

Sorry, I have no idea how long it takes to go through customs and then being sent to airline. Some others compalin that their parcels even got stuck at the airport for nearly 20 days. You are lucky. Hope that you will have your parcel soon.

Sorry, you misunderstand. My parcel has been at "Export Customs Scan" since the 12th. It has not reached "Sent to airline" yet. Should I be worried?

Yes, your parcel hasn't been sent to the airline. According to other people, many parcels left from Beijing have met the same problem. And I can't figure out what happened. Someone said that there were not enough airlines. I don't know if it is true.

It's strange and concerning that no one seems to know what's going on. Are these parcels going to be sent to their destination countries eventually? At least, can you tell me whether or not "Departure from outward office of exchange" means my parcel has passed the customs scan?

M, "Departure from outward office of exchange" simply means that your parcel has left the exportation port of call. Yes, your parcel has been screened by China export customs, and is enroute to USA. It will still have to clear import customs when it arrives at the port of entry (typically San Francisco or Los Angeles).

Once the status "Departure from outward office of exchange" has been entered you can expect NOT to see any status for approximately 2-10 days. This is because although the flight only takes approximately 1 day travel, providing the plane did not have a layover for a day or two, it still gets botttle-necked by customs. Your parcel will sit at the import customs warehouse for several days or even a week depending on volume in the warehouse that needs to be processed. There are very few ports of entry for international parcels so you can imagine just how large the warehouse is and the shear volume involved. Virtually all parcels are x-rayed and screened by K-9's, especially since it is arriving from China. China sends alot of contraband items especially clothing with logos or trademarks that infringe upon copyrights.

Your parcel is registered air mail which takes a little longer to make the journey because it has to be logged every step of the way due to it being a registered piece. Registered mail will typically add about an extra 5-10 days (12-25 days total) compared to e-packet/EMS (7-12 days). That said, once your parcel has been processed by San Francisco ISC or Los Angeles ISC (customs), it is then transferred to normal postal handling. When that transfer takes place the mail will then follow protocol for First Class Mail service and you can then expect your parcel within 4 days typically.

Cheers!

2dazecraze: Thanks for your informative and thorough answer! I do understand that my parcel still needs to go through import customs. However, I'm still confused as to why some parcels get the "Sent to airline" status and others don't. As mine has not received that status, I'm confused about whether or not it has been sent to the airline yet. If it has, tracking for the parcel inside the USA has not shown up (yet?). But as far as I know, tracking for China Post parcels does sometimes stop updating once they leave the country. Should I contact my local post office so they can start updating it again, or should I just wait?

As I said, I don't mind waiting, but I would like to stay informed about where my parcel is and what's going on with it, when it has entered and left inbound customs, when it's gone out for delivery, etc. Because tracking is ambiguous and vague so much of the time, and google brings such varied and sometimes contradictory answers, I often don't know what to believe. It would help sate my curiosity and bring me peace of mind if I could know for sure!

Good news: my parcel is now in the USA! It took 9 days (counting from Aug 12) to get from Beijing to the USPS sort facility. Here's hoping everyone else's parcels are finding their way to their destinations, and that it's smooth sailing from here on out.
