Must I present Invitation Letter for L Visa?

I want to apply for a Tourist L to visit China. In the description of application requirements, it appears to say that I must have a hotel reservation, OR an invitation letter. Is the invitation letter a must, or is it enough for me to show that I have hotel reservations in China? As a tourist, I might not know anyone in China who can provide such a letter.

The invitation letter is a not must. However, if you cannot present the invitation letter, you need to provide your round trip tickets to China and hotel booking in China to apply for your tourist L type to China.
