About:Chinese Permanent Residence Permit

Moving to China for my job

My wife and I plan to move to China for my job for 2-3 years. My company has a project in Beijing which they want me to supervise. I am an American citizen and my wife is Mongolian. We are applying for her green card now and hope to have the process completed before we leave in January of 2015. What type of Visa/Status should I apply for? I see from your other answers that a permanent residency is difficult to get.

Just as you said, the permanent residency is hard, almost impossible to get.

For you, you can apply for a Work Z type for working in China. After entering China, you can change your X type to a resident permit for foreigners. For your wife, she can apply for S1 to stay with you. With S1, she also needs to change to residence permit. In general, every year, both of you need to renew your residence permit to stay for a long time.

If you want to apply together in advance, you can try to tell your company to write both of your names on the invitation letter, otherwise, your wife cannot go with you together to China. She may need to go there several monthes later.
