It is a pity that 72-hour free transit is not applicable for cruise traveling, but only can be used for transfering by flights in the airport.

For your situation, if you stay in Shanghai for less than 24 hours, you can enjoy the 24-hour free transit. If you want to leave Shanghai Port for a visit to city proper, you just need to apply for a stay permit at the Port to leave with your passport and your cruise ticket.

For reaching Taiwan, it is sorry that I have no ideas about their policy. For HK, you can enjoy a 180-free entry, so you can only use your UK's passport to travel.

Hope these information helps ~
