Golden week - from October 1st or September 27th?

Hi, I would like to know WHEN EXACTLY may tourist expect crowds related to Chinese Golden Week. If Chinese people take free days at work on Monday and Tuesday, crowds may appear even on Saturday, September the 27th.. Do I suppose correctly ? So it/s better to avoid travelling five days before October 1st !!!
