If you stay less than 24 hours, you needn't apply for a G type. If you plan to get out of the airport during your stay, you need to apply for a stay permit when you arrive.

THANKS MARK! I am certainly planning to go out of the airport, to the city, as my transit time is around 15 hrs in shanghai. Also, as my flight from Busan reaches shanghai in the evening and since my onward flight to hongkong is on the next day, I will have to check into a hotel for the overnight stay. Will they issue stay permit for overnight stay, even if it is below 24 hrs? And is the process of getting the stay permit easy to deal with or will it take a lot of time?

It doesn't matter. You can take that stay permit to get out of he airport and stay a night. It doesn't take very long to apply for the stay permit. The whole processing time shoul be 2 or 3 minutes.
