About:Hong Kong Visa Policy

if I have an american passport what kind of Visa do I need if Im going to work for sometime in HK

You still need to apply an "Employment as Professionals type" for your work with your valid passport, application form with recent taken photo, travel documents if any, academic records, proof of qualification and related working experience through local Chinese embassy.
