72 hour visa in Beijing

We're both US citizen traveling to Manila, Philippines in September, we would like to visit Beijing n Xiang too. May we use the 72 hour visa? We're going back to Manila after the tour.

You can you will go from Manila to Beijing and then fly back to Manila?
if so, you can not use the 72 hour visa.
you can use the 72 hour free visa only if your destination and place of departure are not the same, eg. New York - Beijing - Manila.
