About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I need to apply for transit free visa?

I am flying from Nairobi to Guangzhou and then New Zealand, my stopover in Guangzhou is 24 hours so thinking of just staying the night at the Baiyun airport hotel. Am I correct in assuming I just tell the airline ground staff that I need 72 hour free transit and they will alert Guangzhou customs? I don't need to apply beforehand?

Thank you!

Yes, you are right. The free transit permit can be done on arrival if you hold NZ passport and have confirmed ticket for leaving.
