Do I need an appointment for a visa application?

I am a US citizen travelling in Vietnam, I need to travel to Nanjing for business from here, and need to get an expedited one. I will travel to Hanoi to the embassy on Monday morning, next week. Should I make an appointment, or is this available on a walk in basis?
