F Visa Extension for Internship

I have received a 30-day F to do an internship in Beijing (ICLC) for one year. The consulate said I should go to the PSB and get at least a 6 month extension there.

Is this realistic?

This is my second F. I had one before last August 2013 for a visit to Shanghai/Beijing.

I just don't want to make the trip only to find out I cannot renew for long enough to honor my contract.

I don't think so. Because extension can not be issued exceeding the original duration of stay.
