Can I buy tickets in advance? As I understand that there is only one bus to Mt. Huashan a day.

You must refer to the tourism bus line 1. Well, no need to book the bus ticket and the bus also doesn't accpect reservation. If you miss that, there are still many direct tourism buses to Mt. Huashan at the east square of Xian Railway Station. Don't worry!1
