Which e-mail provider do you use?
In China, Sina.com and 163. com are two main email providers, so you can try to use them. Or you can use proxy softwares, you can use them to keep using your e-mail provider from your country in China.

Thank you for replying Nat!!.. I use Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail.. All blocked!! LoL I've never heard of Sina.com or 163.com so thank you, I will check them out... I've never used a "proxy software" before.. and besides, I'm not taking my laptop... I will be using a computer from the ppl I'll be staying with... I just need an e-mail provider that isn't blocked to tell my family in the US that I've made it safely etc., and check in with them from time to time. :-)

But I am using hotmail for work in China now and it works well. It is strange that you said that hotmail is even blocked. Just try it again!

Jenni, I'm not in China yet, I'll be there next week... I looked online at the list of blocked websites and that's where I found them... it also does depend on the area in China, and I saw mentioned, that some of the blocked sites may work sometimes.. I'm just trying to find a plan B to make sure I can contact ppl at least via e-mail..

Oh, I am working in Xian, with a computer of course and hotmail works well. Except for trying hotmail, I have a suggestion for you:
there is international QQ now. Upon getting into China, you can register a QQ account and you will get a QQ email accordingly, with which you can contact with your family!

I have had two friends go to China and travel about the country. One used Hotmail and one used Yahoo and both had not one bit of trouble. Also know someone teaching in the north west part of China and has always used hotmail with no trouble. Incidentally, my two friends were there in the last year. I am going to October and planning to use my hotmail.

Hi Dina,

You may use Hotmail. Microsoft is still working in China. Yahoo however is not.

Furthermore I recommend you try QQ.com, from Tencent. It is a very good provider, easy to use.

as i have used gmial accounts ( 1 personal and another professional) and a lot of documents, contacts, corrispondence ( networking ) are there i was wandering if my approach could work:
- i open a new account, one of those suggested in this post
- without communicating the change of email address to a multitude of people:
- i will set up Forwarding functionalities to the new account- so i will not need a VPN to keep in touch with other people
- at the same time i will set up the Vacation responder with the new email

DO you think this can be feasbile and doesn't go against China's GFW rules?
