About:China Visa Application in USA

How do we answer 2.1 "Major purpose of your visit" Son is teacher in China for last 2 years.

And if we intend to go back for another visit next summer should we apply for a 1-2 year visa? It cost the same.

You can choose "Short-term visit to Chinese citizen or foreigner with Chinese permanent residence status" and "Tourism" for this visit. Although the fee is the same for any type of visa for US citizen, the consular officers make the final decision for your application based on documents you provided. You can have a try anyway.
