What's the best way to visit it in China? Local tours? Heard there are different gates/portions.

It's composed of different sections. Most people come to Beijing and then go to visit the wall from there. Some frequently visited sections are Badaling, Mutianyu, Simatai and Jinshanling. There are public buses from Beijing to these wall sections. You can take bus to visit the wall. If you think you will have trouble in taking public buses, you may join a tour. It's more convenient.
