If you want to work, you should apply for a Z type. It's illegal to work with Q type.

If you work from home and your salary is from a different country then YES, you can. Like teaching online English at home.

But if you work in a company and the salary is from a different country then that would be illegal because your working inside an office that pays Chinese tax and pays for the rights to allow their company to do business here in China, so if a foreigner is in the office, then that company needs a license to hire foreigners, it's not just the visa that's the problem. The company needs the license to hire you and you need the Z visa converted into an Resident Permit to step legally into their office.

If you are on an M visa and you travel in and out of China for work and the salary comes from a different country that should be ok.
