If you wanna travel on your own, you need to apply for a Chinese visa in advance for this trip!

However, if you join a tour through an International Travel Agency that registered in HN Province and there are 5 people and more people in the tour, you will be exempt from visa for 15 days there.

We plan to stay in HongKong for couples week and join a tour from Hongkong to Hainan. Will the situation be different? Is it common for the tours from HK qualify to bring us to Hainan without visa?

I'm afraid not. The travel agency has to be registered in HN province, so if possible, contact a local travel agency in advance!
