About:Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Size of Panda

I was thinking of going to the Chengdu Research Base Of Giant Panda Breeding this May 2014. How old and how large are the pandas that you can hug? I would really like to have one small enough to sit on my lap. Thanks for your help!

Hi, J.
It is hard to describe how big it is, but I can tell you that you can let the pandas sit on your legs and you can hug it for about one minutes. Usually, it is just a young panda.

Thanks Bill! I appreciate your taking the time to answer... :)
There are so many images online where you see people holding a panda the size of a larger stuffed animal.. while other images have people sitting beside much larger pandas but they can't really hug or hold it. I would really like to be able to hold one. :)
Hopefully I can figure out the current size and age of the pandas.

Thanks again!

I was just there last week. The pandas that you are allowed to hold are the 8-10 month olds and they are truly magnificent! I wish I could post a picture of me and the little one named Sa... what an incredible experience. Be sure to bring the 2000 CNY in cash as they do not accept credit cards. Have fun!!

Hi!

I just returned from China myself a couple days ago. I did end up going to Chengdu and going through the Keeper Experience. I had my photo taken with a 9 months old girl panda.. so absolutely adorable. Loved her.. It was the best day ever!! :)

Hi J, the Keeper Experience sounds great! Is this something you had to arrange in advance or did you arrange it the day you got to the reserve? Thanks for your help! L from Canada.

You will need to book it in advance b/c all the spaces fill up fast. You won't be able to do it if you just show up on the day.. We reserved it a couple weeks before going.

Hi J
I'm going to the panda base in October and want to do the panda experience but just wondered how I would go about booking it in advance? Did you use a website or agency?

I just went to their website and sent an email listing myself and my husband by name, and when I wanted to be there. They list that they want you to call, but I figured the language barrier/accent (over a phone) and time difference would make it a bit tricky.. so I sent an email. They confirmed the next day. :)
It was really quite easy!
In case they forget to mention to you in the email, you will need to bring cash. No credit cards.
