how close is the St. Ignatius Catherdal to the Howard Johnson All Suites Hotel on 1155 Yanan road in Shanghai?

what is the best means transportation?

There is about 5km by car from your hotel to the church.

Of course, the best method is to take a taxi to reach directly and the taxi fare is around 20RMB to 25RMB if the road condition is good. The transfer is a little bit difficult according to my experience.
