Hard Sleeper seat selection with friends

Hi, we want to travel between Shangai and Beijing and want to stay at Hard Sleeper how is the seat selection works in these trains since we want to stay in the same compartment all 6 of us ? Thank you

1. hard sleeper compartment is in fact quite open with no door between the sleeping area and hallway
2. 6 bunks are arranged 3 each side and as you can imagine the top bunk is quite close to the ceiling :)

I meant that whether we can select The beds or not when we are buying The tickets online ?

Buy online, are random, you can only choose hard or soft.
