Duration of the stay

I am looking to visit a relative in China, and I want to obtain the 90 day visa. I was told that I need to procure an invitation letter from the relative. Is that correct? If I do managed to procure it, does it guarantee that I will receive the maximum allowable stay? Thanks.

Yes, invitation letter from your relative is required for application, but I have to say that the letter can not guarantee the maximum allowable stay.
