Changing rail tickets

I have bought a high-speed ticket from Jinan to Beijing for this Wednesday at 09:40, but have just learned that I have to stay for another meeting in Jinan and need to take a later train. A Chinese colleague told me that I can only change the ticket before departure with no penalties or two hours maximum after the original departure time but with a penalty. Is it really so? I understand the penalty but not the loss of the whole fare for a late departure.

Have you got your tickets already? If you do, then you need to change your train tickets at the railway station and no penalty, or, you can cancel the tickets for paying some amount of penalty. All these actions need to be taken 2 hours before the train departure time. Suggest you go to the station even earlier, actually, you can do this the night before.

Thanks Gordon. My problem is that I live far away from the station and will defintely be there after my original train left, so I need to change it afterwards anyway, not two hours before departure.

As far as i know, the tckets can be cancelled 2 hours later after the train departing. You can try it when you are there, but not 100% for sure. Hope undertanding. Or, do you have any Chinese friends, you can ask one to call the service person for the actual information.

Hi Edward, thanks a lot for the advice. I went to the station after my original train had departed and could change it with no penalties. I was also told that you can do it up to two hours after departure.
