What if I just want to visit China and then directly return to the USA within 72 hours?

I'm interested in visiting someone in Chongqing. Do I need a visa if I am not visiting another country and just returning to the USA in less than 72 hours?

Since you will come from and return to the same contry and do not go to the third country, you can not enjoy the 72 hours visa free policy and visa is still needed if you visit Chongqing.
