About:Safety in China

I will be going to Beijing in June and then traveling to Kaiyuan City.

I am worried about how safe it will be for my mom and I to travel to Kaiyuan City and then to a small village outside of it. We are American, but we are also of African descent. Will we be alright to travel here alone?

You needn't worry too much. It's safe for you to stay there.

You will be fine. Keep in mind that China is not the melting pot that North American and Europe are. People may point at you and say "hei ren" (black person), but they do not mean it in a racist or offensive way, it is socially acceptable, and nothing negative is intended. In fact, they may even ask you to take pictures with them, I had this request many times as I am 6'8 and blond!! it is something new for them. Enjoy the celebrity status ;)
