About:China Tourist Visa

I am a intern on a j1 visa in the states and visiting China after my visit to Thailand?

Since i am not going to PRC directly from the US but from Thailand, do i still apply from the chinese embassy from the US? Also i am a Canadian citizen working in the US as a intern and visiting other Asian countries after my internship.
