Extension of 6-Month Tourist (L) Visa in Shanghai

Dear Sir/Madam

I am a Zimbabwean passport holder currently on a 6-month, double entry, tourist L due to expire at the end of February 2014. I am staying with friends in Shanghai, and I wanted to know if it would be possible for me to extend it without having to leave China, and what the procedure would be. I also wanted to know what the maximum extension of this would be, and if it would be better to perhaps go and apply for a new tourist L maybe from Hong Kong?

I look forward to your advice/recommendation.

Thanks in advance.

Tendai

Have you used up two entries of the L? if yes, you can apply extension at Shanghai PSB. your friend's Household Register or Resident Identification Card and an invitation letter in Chinese addressed to the PSB are required for extension. The lettter should include: a. basic information of the applicant and your friend; b. your itinerary and duration of stay in China; c. a guarantee of living expenses; d. both signatures affixed on site. It is hard to say how long will you be granted because the consular officers have the final say to it.

Thank you Robin, very useful indeed. I am glad to know I don't have to incur the expense of a trip to HK. Thank again! Happy Chinese New Year!

Sorry, one last thing. Would you have any idea what it costs to apply for an extension?

As I remember, it is RMB 168 for a single entry, and 252 for a double entry.

Thank you Fiona, I've seen here and in most other sources that I can only renew L for 30 days and no more. Is this the case? I was hoping I could renew for another 3-6months. Would it be more advisable then to just go to Hong Kong and apply for a new L altogether?

It is true that an extension is generally issued with 30 days, but it is not a guarantee that you will get 6 month one as you wish even you apply for a new one in Hong Kong.
