Yes, it is ok. You can use this 72 hour free transit for your stay in Shanghai. Make sure to prepare a ticket leaving from Shanghai to Paris.

Hi Richard from UK, in response to your reply here, can you help me?, i am trying to establish what and interline ticket is and if i have to have a connecting transit flight to apply for the 72 hours free transit permit or can i purchase 2 separate flights.? the reason i ask is because i would like to stay in Guangzhou for a couple of days before going to LA and its not possible to book a connecting flight for this long. I will be coming from Bali or Kuala Lumpur on a British passport. Thank you.

Hi Tanya, as I know, two separate tickets are acceptable for this free transit permit application.
