About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

traveling to taipei, then on way home have 1.5 days in beijing

hello, traveling to Taipei then on way back to the US have a flight to Beijing and then leaving Beijing 36 hrs later. Do I need a special visa to leave the airport to see the great wall? If so do I get it in the airport and is that office open 24hrs a day?

Hi, you can avail this 72 hour free transit permit after arrival at Beijing airport. Don't worry, the issuing office will be open when the last flight arrive at the airport. Your passport and flight ticket back to US are enough for application.
