Can I travel to china on May 24 2014 if my passport and chinese residence permit expire on Aug8 2014

My son's passport expires on 18 Aug 2014. He has a valid chinese residence permit in his Indian passport, valid till the same day. He plans to travel from India to Shanghai on the 24th of May 2014. Will this be a problem? Can he travel to Shanghai with this passport validity and then renew his passport in PRC?

I think your son can travel in mainland China with his passport and resident permit. It's ok for him to renew his passport at the Indian consulate in Shanghai. But why doesn't he renew his passport first in India and then travel to PRC with his resident permit? If he renews his passport in India, he'd better bring his old and new passports together.

Thanks Monika, While I agree that this would seem the obvious thing to do, due to the complexity of his situation in terms of address change etc, I wld prefer to avoid it. Hence the qs
