About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Canceled flight

I had a layover of less than 72 hours in Beijing on a flight from tokyo to Hong Kong. On the flight out of Beijing, I had a stop for two hours in Kunming before flying to hong kong. Now the flight from kunming to Hong Kong is canceled and the airline wants to rebook me for the following morning (meaning I have to stay overnight in Kunming). Can I leave the airport to get a hotel?

I think your airline should arrange accomodation. If not, you have to find a place to spend your night. I don't know how long you stay together in Beijing and Kunming. Since you stop in Kunming apart from Beijing, you won't enjoy 72 hours free transit in Beijing. But you can enjoy 24 hours free transit if you stay less than 24 hours in Beijing and Kunming. In this way, you should apply for a stay permit when you land at Beijing Airport.
