Which visa for studies and travelling?

Hi! I have been admitted for a one semester of Chinese studies at a university in Beijing and have been told to apply the X2 type. The semester ends in July but I would like to go for a summer course in Shangai later on and also travel for about a month (also outside China, to Korea) so I will spend around 7-8 months in China in general. Will my X2 type expire in July and should I apply for a multiple entries tourist type? Can I do it while in Beijing? Or is it possible not to apply for the X2 and stay on a L type for the whole period or maybe on some other visa type? Maybe a multiple entry F type?

Personally, I think you should apply for a F type for your summer course in Shanghai and then another L for your traveling. According to the new entry and exit administration law, foreigners are not allowed to do anything which is not in accordance with their visa types. It means that you can't study if you hold L type. As for apply new type visa without leaving, I think you should confirm this with the Beijing entry and exit administration bureau. Tel: 010-84020101

Ruby: would you say I could apply for the F type instead of X2 for the 5months in Beijing+ the 5 weeks in shanghai and than for the L type for travelling? Or am I required to have the X2 when studying at Chinese uni? And if so could I maybe use the X2 for Beijing+shanghai? Asia M

No, I didn't say that you should apply for the F type instead of X2. I don't know what kind of course you will study in Shanghai. Therefore, I suggest you apply for a F after you finish your X2 at the university in Beijing. It would be better if you can get a X2 that covers both Beijing and Shanghai. Then you can apply for a double or multiple entry L according to your arrangement.
