About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Bridge visa for a few hours

I have a 12 month multi entry one which kicks in on the 3rd jan 2014 but arrangements have changed since application and I need to be in Shanghai on 2nd jan, can I get a 72 hr free transit to cover the short fall which would only be a few hours

I am afraid that you can't. If you plan to make use of 72 hours free transit in Shanghai, you need to provide a connecting air ticket for the third country or destination. And visa (if necessary) for the third country or destination is also required.

Thanks but I probably needed to mention that I would have a ticket to Chengdu on 6th jean them to Melbourne Aus

So your route is from your country-Shanghai-Chengdu(by train)-Melbourne? If so, the answer is still "No".
