Why is some sections of the wall flat and others with short passthroughs?

About the short pass-throughs, I wonder whether you are referring to the beacon towers on the Great Wall, which were used to report the information of the enemy. When the enemy attacked, they fired wolves ’ dung in the daytime or flames at nights to report the generals or emperors and they would get ready to fight.
