The Confucianism developed because it is the core ideas in Chinese feudal system, which helped the authorites to control common people's thoughts and think.
In Han Dynasty, in order to protect the central authority, the Emperor carried out the Confucianism only. The Confucianism provides the basic ideas to organize a government. Later in Ming adn Qing Dynasty, the exams are based on the classical books of Confucianism and the officials are selected based on the exams. As a result, the Confuciansim enjoyed its special status in that period.
These are my opinions and hope it can help you.
