Who were the religiously leaders of the Tang Dynasty and what was their holy books?

If I have to give a name, it should be Tang Xuzang (Chen Yi), who went through many difficulties to get back the Buddhist scriptures from India in 17 years. There was no certain holy books then for the religion. If any, they were the Buddhist scriptures.
