About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

So just to be clear..

I am a US citizen (US Passport) living in South Korea. Can I take a round trip flight from ICN (Seoul) to Beijing and still get the 72-Hour visa free?

I answered my own question- so revision:
Can I fly from Seoul to Beijing, stay for less than 72 hours free transit, then fly to Tokyo (or another city), eventually heading back to Seoul?

It is ok if you fly from Beijing to Tokyo, but a round-trip ticket does not apply to this free transit.
